High School Students work as Junior Volunteers at hospitals for the summer
Five students from local high schools are working as junior volunteers at Marshall Medical Centers this summer in an early step toward a career in medicine.
Four of the students are working on patient floors at Marshall South shadowing nurses and PCAs, as well as stocking supplies and creating packets for new admissions. One high schooler is helping out in the gym on the Marshall North campus. Every contribution is a significant one.
“Junior Volunteers serve a very important role at MMCenters,” said Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Woodruff. “These students are given the opportunity to be exposed to healthcare and in doing that they are able to make a decision about their future. We appreciate all they do for us and hope that they will come back to work at MMCenters once they finish their education.”
Linda Banda, a senior at Crossville High School, is a Certified Nursing Assistant. Her goal is to become a doctor of sports medicine. She has a summer job at the Snead State Community College bookstore.
Miseneline Ceneus, a sophomore at Boaz High School, plans to become an ultrasound tech. Over the summer she is working for the Boaz school system.
Katrina Retel is a junior at Albertville Innovation Academy where she enjoys studying math. She wants to become a pediatrician or a surgeon. In addition to spending two days a week at the hospital, she works a summer job at McDonald’s.
Angelina Gomez, a senior at Albertville Innovation Academy, applied to be a junior volunteer because she wants to become a nurse. She also has a part-time job at Auto Zone.
Catarina Nguyen, a sophomore at Arab High School, is volunteering at Marshall North Wellness Center. She sanitizes workout equipment, re-stocks supplies, folds towels and helps the gym staff as needed. She knows she wants a career in the medical field but is not yet sure what her focus will be.
Students 15 years old and up can apply to work as summer volunteers in May. Online applications can be found at mmcenters.com. Click on the About tab and then Volunteering.
